Porsche Macan wins Best Sports SUV at What Car? Awards

28/1/2020

The new Porsche Macan S has been named ‘Best Sports SUV’ at the annual What Car? Car of the Year Awards held in London.

This latest recognition underlines the Macan success story. Since its launch in 2014, more than 350,000 vehicles have been delivered worldwide, which is testament to the model’s reputation as the best sports car of the compact SUV segment. The powerful, 354 PS V6 petrol engine of the Macan S model asserts the dynamic reputation of the Macan, and the latest generation also introduces a refreshed style to the exterior design, greater interior comfort and increased connectivity.

The new Macan was launched in the UK just over a year ago, and the range has since expanded to include GTS and Turbo derivatives.

The magazine’s judging panel commented; “the Macan S is more enjoyable than its rivals on the road, thanks to super-accurate steering, tightly-controlled body movements and a wonderfully balanced feel.”

The judges’ verdict was emphatic; “if you are looking for a sports SUV that’s as well-rounded as it is thrilling, the Macan S is the one to choose.”

Porsche Cars Great Britain Managing Director, Marcus Eckermann, received the award from What Car? Editor, Steve Huntingford.

In addition to the Macan scooping the overall Sports SUV Award, the new Porsche 911 Carrera also placed first in the category for best sports car over £60,000. Taking evident joy from the ability of the iconic sports coupé to turn even the shortest drive into an adventure. The judges commented; “although it is perfectly usable every day, thanks to its blend of relative comfort, practicality and ease of use, it can still plaster a big, stupid grin across your face.”

The Porsche Cayenne Turbo Coupé also headed its category, nominated as best sports SUV over £60,000. Launched only last Spring, the new addition to the five-door, four-wheel drive Cayenne family is clearly one of the sports cars in its segment; “The coupé is more agile than not only the regular Cayenne, thanks to a tweaked suspension set-up, but also key competitors. The fact that standard air suspension helps the Cayenne Turbo Coupé to soak up bumpy roads remarkably well for such a sporting SUV only adds to its huge appeal.”
